The Structural Root Zone (SRZ) is the area around the base of a tree that must be protected to maintain its structural stability. The No Root Zone (NRZ) is a smaller inner zone where root disturbance would cause unacceptable damage to the tree. These calculations are a standard part of any AIA prepared under AS 4970-2025 and are used to determine where construction activity can and cannot occur near retained trees.
